Net Neutrality at Risk

Understanding “Net Neutrality”

Net neutrality is the idea that internet service providers (ISPs) should enable access to all content, regardless of the source. Without net neutrality, ISPs could block access to content they do not like, for example their competitor’s websites. Even if ISPs are not entirely blocking websites, they could still be slowing websites down for users.

Why is this important?

Getting rid of net neutrality could largely impact movements against oppression. Black Lives Matter and other organizations could have their website blocked or intentionally slowed down without net neutrality, which could drastically hurt their movement and remove their ability to spread awareness.

Maintaining net neutrality is crucial to small businesses. This allows businesses to launch online and utilize web resources for marketing. Without it, there would be no way for them to succeed over large giants.

Day of Action

July 12th is the Day of Action for Net Neutrality. On this day, many organizations are working to spread awareness, because even though many people know that net neutrality is currently at risk, they don’t necessarily understand the implications.

The organizations participating will be demonstrating what the internet would be like without net neutrality. Many will “close” their website or say users will need to pay for the website, but then explain that isn’t the current situation, but could be soon.

Wrap Up

Freedom of the internet could be at risk currently. July 12th is the World-Wide Day of Action, taking place in hopes of preventing anyone from dismantling net neutrality.

Without net neutrality, internet service providers (ISPs) can control what websites people can access and how quickly. This could be problematic for both activism groups and small businesses especially.

Spread the word and reach out to representatives to help make sure the internet stays open for everyone.
